The Alsfeld City Museum is operated by the History and Museum Society (GMV). Founded in 1897 under the name “History and Antiquities Society of the City of Alsfeld,” the association opened a museum in the Weinhaus just one year later. When those premises became too small, the city provided the first and second floors of the Hochzeitshaus; from 1951, all four floors were dedicated to the museum. The collection remained in that building from 1912 until 1975.
Since 1977, the City Museum—then known as the “Regional Museum”—has been located in two patrician houses, the Minnigerode and Neurath houses in Rittergasse. These buildings were structurally linked. Currently, the museum is undergoing an extensive phase of renovation, realignment, and modernization. The Minnigerode and Neurath houses, along with the adjacent barn, will continue to form the core of the museum and house the GMV’s new permanent exhibition on the history of Alsfeld.
A new central depot has been established nearby as the heart of the collection, providing space for the GMV’s extensive holdings of more than 11,500 exhibits. This depot will also facilitate fascinating special exhibitions on changing themes at the museum in Rittergasse. Visitors can look forward to a wide range of experiences at the City Museum. (JP)
